Monitoring urban chemistry at the street corner: the SMILE startup project

Abstract

The SMILE project purpose is to recreate confidence through a transparent and collaborative use of science, and to demystify technology by showing the benefits of accurate and transparent data collection, data processing and ergonomic display of these, in order to bring the citizen into strong communities that will collectively grow awareness on change in habits, both mental and concrete. The SMILE originality is to bring together the finest technology and computer science achievements to feed these concepts with data and leverage the Empowerment of citizens through participative science and innovative incentives in Living Lab communities, following the motto of the Helsinki Manifesto of 2006: “we have to move fast, before it is too late”. • Citizens will produce data related to pollution by holding mobile air sensors • Citizens will control data that are processed and displayed on Intelligent City Digital Twin (ICDT) platforms and mobile apps • Citizens will value data by collaborating and sharing knowledge with stakeholders in Living Labs for innovative solutions • Citizens will thus, change their behaviors by science-driven principles (long term) and interest or emotional-driven incentives (short and medium term).
