Gilbert Bécaud's major hit of 1964, "Nathalie," is studied using the methods of comprehensive song analysis. The literary aspects, musical dimensions, and interpretation of this song are linked to the cultural, social, and political contexts of the 1960s. These play a crucial role in establishing the meaning of "Nathalie." The conservative vision of the blonde woman, the appropriation of tempo variations from a Russian song ("Kalinka"), and the desire to promote France in the USSR by creating new cultural ties outside the French Communist Party reveal the Gaullist character of a song created during De Gaulle's first presidential term.
