Japanese Shakuhachi Honkyoku: Its Characteristics and their Implications for its Analysis and Representation

Abstract

A invited lecture given at the Institut fûr Musikethnologie, Kunstuniversitat, Graz, Austria. This lecture presents an approach to analysing a musical genre, shakuhachi Honkyoku, that is based on the manipulation of timbre rather than melody and rhythm in such a way to capture pertinent characteristics of the music. A model of timbre in melody is presented.
