Voyage en terra incognita : la question de l’intégration du monologue intérieur dans un récit littéraire
Résumé
Interior monologue is surrounded by confusion. In this article, we claim that interior monologue is a narratological category which emphasises the verbality of the character’s internal speech, and makes use of different linguistic techniques : immediate discourse but more often some techniques of reported speech: (free) direct speech and, to a lesser extent, free indirect speech. Even if it seems contradictory, in literature, interior monologue is intrinsically reported because the reader needs a third party to give them access to the inaccessible: the content of someone else’s mind. Those techniques have specificities pertaining to them, explaining why an author will use one or the other.
